City & Guilds 6189 Diploma in Plumbing & Domestic Heating (Coming Soon)
What will this qualification replace?
This qualification will replace the current Technical Certificate (6129 Certificate in Plumbing Studies) and the NVQ (6089 NVQ in Plumbing)
Who is designing the qualification?
The Sector Skills Council (SSC), SummitSkills, are designing the structure of the qualification and the core assessment strategy. City & Guilds are working with the SSC and other partners to develop the units. City & Guilds will then work with partners to develop suitable assessments and materials for the finalised qualification.
When will the qualification go live?
The aim is that this qualification will go live in September 2010. At the time of publishing this FAQ document, we are on target for meeting this date.
When do existing qualifications end?
Both the 6129 and 6089 have registration end dates of 31 December 2010. However, it is possible that funding may not be available for new candidates beyond August 2010.
Will this qualification be on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF)?
Yes.
Who is this qualification aimed at?
Individuals who wish to become a qualified plumber or domestic heating engineer.
Will this make up part of an apprenticeship?
It is expected that this qualification will be used as part of the SummitSkills Apprenticeship programme. Full details of the new apprenticeship framework are not currently available.
How many qualifications will there be in the 6189?
There will be two qualifications under this qualification number; plumbing and domestic heating. Candidates will become either a plumber or domestic heating engineer depending on the rule of combination of units achieved and pathway taken.
What level are the qualifications available at?
Level 2 and 3. There will be an entry level qualification developed for Building Services Engineering as a whole. Details about this will become available in due course.
Will the qualifications have optional units?
The qualification will consist of entirely mandatory units, but there will be a choice as to which fuel route candidates may wish to take.
